Q/D #13
“A whole lot of folk could be writin and speakin real, real smart if Fish and others stop using one prescriptive, foot-long ruler to measure the language of peeps who use a yard stick when they communicate.” (112)
Standard English leaves no room for diverse ways of speaking. They only allow one Professional English type of language one could speak and limit all the other types or tell you to talk that way at an unprofessional setting such as home. Standard English doesn’t allow for creativity while writing and that’s the big issue. You’re forcing one to write in a way that they aren’t comfortable with nor feel like it truly represents them. Rules are made to be broken and that’s what he have to enforce in the English writing and communicating.
