Q/D #12
“For a people who are neither Spanish nor live in a country which Spanish is the first language; for a people who live in a country where English is the reigning tongue but who are not Anglo; for a people who cannot entirely identify with either standard Spanish nor English, what recourse is left to them but to create their own language?” (3)
For a lot of ethnic people whose English isn’t their first language and live in a country where it is, they are being put high pressure on to learn perfect English. Their rights of being able to talk in their original language are stopped away from them. They are then left in a weird head space, not sure with what language they identify with anymore. With that, they start making their own language. One with how they communicate to friends, family, professionals, etc... Having learned English as my second language, I’ve gone through the struggle of communicating to different people in different ways. It’s a complicated, time consuming process that I have perfected to over the years.
