Q/D #7
“If such a student were working in a course that encouraged exploring questions rather than following a formula for putting together an argument, that student would have the chance to experience just how much is involved in understanding a complex issue in depth and what it means to use ones writing to think new thoughts” (116).
Students have been given formulas for all the writing assignments which has disabled the ability for them to think creatively. If students weren’t given a formula of what their writing should look like, how their ideas should be organized, then their writings would be different, more thoughtful and they’ll have an opportunity to think harder and much better than what they would’ve thought when a formula was presented to them. I really like the idea of students not getting a formula for writing because, personally, I think throughout high school, my essays would’ve been better if my teachers had allowed me to think for myself and let me take control of how my essay was to be written. Without having a formula, my mind would’ve been forced to think deeply into things than just what is written in front of me.
